A portable pour over coffee filter is what lets you leave the hotel lobby urn alone. A cone that folds flat, opens onto your mug, and strains through double layer micro mesh instead of paper. Grounds, hot water and a mug are the whole kit.

  • Two layers of 304 stainless micro mesh, so there are no paper filters to buy or forget
  • Opens to 4.65 inches and bridges most mugs, cups and travel tumblers
  • Folding arms pack flat into a pannier, a suitcase pocket or a pack lid
  • Side handle keeps your fingers off hot metal while the water runs through
  • Fuller body than paper, since the oils go straight into the cup. Grind a notch coarser
  • Knock out the grounds, rinse under a tap. Dishwasher safe, and it works for loose leaf tea

Description

A portable pour over coffee filter is the piece of gear that lets you leave the hotel lobby urn alone. It is a stainless steel cone that folds flat, opens up to sit on top of a mug, and strains your coffee through a double layer of micro mesh instead of paper. No machine, no cords, no filter packs to forget at home. Grounds, hot water and a mug are the entire kit.

Portable pour over coffee filter in stainless steel, collapsible double mesh cone resting on a mug
The portable pour over coffee filter opens to 4.65 inches and rests on most mugs.

We started carrying this portable pour over coffee filter because customers kept asking the same question before a camping trip. They wanted our coffee on the road but did not want to haul glass into a tent. This solves that, and it costs less than most people spend on bad airport coffee in a week.

What a Portable Pour Over Coffee Filter Is and Who It Suits

The whole portable pour over coffee filter is one piece of stainless steel. The mesh basket is the filter, so there is nothing to consume and nothing to replace. When you are done you knock the grounds into a compost bin or the dirt, rinse it under a tap, and it is ready for the next cup.

The holder folds. Open, it spans 4.65 inches, which is wide enough to bridge most mugs, travel tumblers and standard coffee cups. Closed, it lies flat enough to slide into a pannier, a suitcase pocket or a backpack lid. There is a handle on the side so you are not gripping hot metal while water runs through.

This suits campers, backpackers, people who travel for work and anyone who wants one clean cup at a desk without dragging out a carafe. If you want a full kit for the kitchen counter instead, our Pour Over Coffee Set includes a carafe and papers. If you want a showpiece for a bar cart, look at the Rustic Industrial Pour Over. And if the no paper idea appeals but you want an all glass version at home, the Pure Over Brew Kit XL is the one to read next.

How to Brew With a Portable Pour Over Coffee Filter

Brewing with a portable pour over coffee filter changes the recipe slightly. Mesh has larger openings than paper, so fines slip through and the water moves faster. Grind a notch coarser than you would for a paper cone and the cup cleans up immediately.

  1. Grind 17 g of coffee at medium coarse. Think coarse sand, closer to what you would use in a French press than a V60. If your first cup is muddy and silty, go coarser before you change anything else. Our grind size guide has a reference for each setting.
  2. Open the filter and set it on your mug. Make sure the rim is seated and the handle is clear of the mug handle. Rinse it with hot water first, which preheats the mug and the steel so your brew does not drop ten degrees on contact.
  3. Heat about 270 g of water to 200F to 205F. On a camp stove, bring it to a boil, pull it off and count to thirty. That gets you close.
  4. Add the grounds and pour 40 g to bloom. Wet all of the coffee and stop. Give it 30 to 40 seconds. You will see the bed puff up and release carbon dioxide left over from roasting. Skipping the bloom leaves that gas in the way and the water channels around dry pockets.
  5. Pour the rest slowly in small circles. Keep the stream near the center and do not flood the walls of the mesh. Coffee pushed up the side of a metal cone sits there dry and contributes nothing.
  6. Finish around three minutes to three and a half. If it drains in ninety seconds you are too coarse. If it stalls past four and a half minutes, too fine.
  7. Lift the cone off, set it on the lid or a plate, and drink it. Give the mug a gentle stir first, since the last of the brew is stronger than the first.

Out in the field you usually will not have a scale. Two level tablespoons of ground coffee is close to 17 g, and a standard 12 oz mug is close to 340 g of water. Adjust from there by taste. Our brew guide covers how to read what a cup is telling you.

What a Portable Pour Over Coffee Filter Does to the Cup

Here is the roaster’s version of the truth. Metal and paper give you two different drinks from the same beans. Paper absorbs most of the coffee oils and catches nearly all of the fine particles, which produces a light, transparent cup. A portable pour over coffee filter lets those oils straight through.

The result has more weight on the tongue and a rounder finish. You may find a little sediment at the bottom of the mug. That is normal for mesh, and it is the tradeoff for body. If it bothers you, coarsen the grind and pour a touch more gently.

Because oils carry so much of the roast character, this method flatters medium and darker roasts. Chocolate, caramel and nutty notes come through fuller here than they do through paper. A very bright, light roasted African coffee can taste slightly heavier and less defined, though plenty of people prefer it that way. Our roast guide explains how to pick, and our blends and seasonal coffees travel particularly well because they hold up to rough grinding and imprecise water.

Water temperature still matters in a tent. Water boils cooler at altitude, so at 7,000 feet a rolling boil is only about 198F and your coffee will taste flatter. Grind a bit finer up high to compensate. At home, where you can set an exact number, a variable kettle like the Fellow Stagg EKG Pro makes that adjustment a dial instead of a guess.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it really work without paper?

Yes. The double layer micro mesh is the filter. You will get a heavier bodied cup and a little sediment, which is the normal tradeoff for reusable metal.

Will this portable pour over coffee filter fit my mug?

The holder opens to 4.65 inches, which covers most standard mugs, cups and travel tumblers. Very wide bowls and very narrow bottles are the exceptions.

How do I clean a portable pour over coffee filter on the road?

Knock out the grounds, rinse it under running water and shake it dry. Once a week at home, run it through the dishwasher or soak it in hot water with a little dish soap to clear oils out of the mesh.

Can I use it for tea?

Yes. The same mesh works for loose leaf tea. Rest it on the mug, add leaves, pour and lift it out when the steep is done.

How much coffee should I use per cup?

Start at 17 g of medium coarse grounds to about 270 g of water, roughly a 1 to 16 ratio, and adjust to taste.
