Berk’s Beans Coffee began in 2019 as a home-kitchen hobby and grew — on a dare from my kids — into a small-batch, roast-to-order specialty coffee business in Concord, CA. Here’s the story of how it happened.
A Dare, a Passion, and a Roastery
Back in 2019, I started roasting coffee as a simple hobby from my home kitchen. What fascinated me most wasn’t just the taste, but the science behind coffee roasting — the transformation of a raw green bean into something rich, aromatic, and full of personality.
Friends and family loved what I was making. But it wasn’t until my kids dared me — “Dad, you should make this a business!” — that I truly jumped. For me, it wasn’t just about coffee anymore; it was about showing them you can take something you love and turn it into something bigger. Berk’s Beans Coffee was born from that dare.
Crafting Coffee, One Roast at a Time
In the early days, I roasted every single batch myself. I still do most of the roasting today, but now I’ve started teaching a couple of team members my methods — because quality isn’t just a process, it’s a standard. Every roast is mapped out carefully:
- Clean and tune the equipment.
- Plan the day’s orders — since everything is roasted fresh to order.
- Get into the zone — turn on the music and watch how sound, time, and temperature come together.
It’s long work, but it’s therapeutic. And at the end of each roast, we label every bag with the most important date — the roast date (we like to call it the “born on” date) — before packing and shipping. If you’re curious what actually happens inside the roaster, I broke it down in the coffee roasting process.
Learning the Hard Way
My biggest mistake starting out? Investing in equipment without a clear plan. Coffee roasting taught me patience, discipline, and strategy — it’s not just about turning beans brown, it’s about building a process that consistently delivers. Along the way I discovered that roasting isn’t just art or science or craftsmanship. It’s all three, working in harmony.
The Customer Connection
The real proof of what we do comes from the people who drink our coffee. One of the greatest compliments is when someone tries Berk’s Beans at a café like Java Jack’s, Alpine Bakery, or Grumpy Fox Coffee Co., and then goes out of their way to find us. People don’t seek you out unless they’ve fallen in love with what you’re making.
One special project that stands out is our “Decoy Blend.” It started as a custom roast for a single customer — but it quickly grew into one of our most-loved coffees. That’s the beauty of roasting: every bean, every blend, has the potential to become someone’s new favorite.
Why We Roast
For me, roasting coffee is about creating something that makes people stop, sip, and smile. It’s about honoring every bean’s unique flavor profile, from our bold Espresso Blend to our smooth Kona Blend. At the end of the day, it’s not just coffee. It’s passion, it’s craft, it’s a legacy for my family — and hopefully, a daily delight for everyone who takes a sip.
