Description
The AeroPress Original coffee maker is the press we reach for on the roasting floor when we need to taste a new lot in a hurry. We do not stock it because it moves units. We stock it because it is the brewer we actually use to check a roast, it takes about two minutes start to finish, and it tells us the honest truth about what came out of the drum that morning.

If you have only ever had coffee from a drip machine or a pod, the first cup out of this press is going to read differently. Cleaner. Heavier in the middle. Less of that dry, papery finish that shows up when a batch brewer sits on a hot plate. That difference is not marketing. It is what happens when you take control of three variables at once.
What the AeroPress Original Coffee Maker Is, and Who It Is For
Mechanically, the AeroPress Original coffee maker is a syringe. You put a paper filter in the cap, load ground coffee in the chamber, add hot water, stir, and push. Pressure from your hand forces the brew through the bed and into the cup. That press stroke is the part no drip machine can copy, and it is why the body lands somewhere between a pour over and a small espresso.
We sell a lot of these to three kinds of people. Office drinkers who are done with the break room pot. Renters and students with counter space measured in inches. And travelers, though if travel is the whole point you may want the AeroPress Go Plus, which packs into its own tumbler, or the AeroPress Clear if you want something that will not crack in a pack.
It makes one cup at a time. If you are brewing for a table of four every morning, this is the wrong tool and we will say so.
How to Brew with the AeroPress Original Coffee Maker
Most bad cups from this press come from grinding too coarse and then compensating by steeping forever. Do not do that. Here is the recipe we use at the roastery for a single mug, and it is a good starting point for almost any coffee we sell.
- Heat water to 200 to 205 degrees Fahrenheit. Off boil by thirty seconds is close enough. For very light roasts go to full boil.
- Grind 17 grams of coffee at a fine drip setting, a little finer than table salt and noticeably finer than you would use in a French press. Our grind size guide shows what that looks like in the hand.
- Seat a paper filter in the cap, rinse it with hot water, and screw the cap onto the chamber.
- Stand the chamber on your mug and add the ground coffee.
- Pour 60 grams of water, just enough to wet everything, and stir for ten seconds. This bloom stage drives off carbon dioxide, which is what keeps water from soaking the grounds evenly.
- Fill to 250 grams total. That puts you near a 1 to 15 ratio.
- Stir twice, insert the plunger to seal, and wait until the one minute mark.
- Press slowly and evenly. Thirty seconds of push is right. Stop the moment you hear air hiss, because everything after that hiss is bitter.
Total time in the AeroPress Original coffee maker is about two minutes. If the cup tastes thin and sour, grind finer. If it tastes dry and harsh, grind coarser or press sooner. Those two adjustments fix almost everything, and our brew guide walks through the rest.

What It Does to the Cup, from Where We Sit
Paper catches oils and fines. That is the whole story of why an AeroPress Original coffee maker cup reads cleaner than a French press cup. You lose some of the heavy mouthfeel and you gain clarity, which means the acidity and the aromatics in a good coffee come forward instead of hiding behind sediment.
Short contact time matters just as much, and the AeroPress Original coffee maker keeps it short by design. One minute of steeping plus a fast press pulls the sweet, soluble compounds and leaves most of the bitter ones behind. That is forgiving in a useful way. A darker roast that would turn ashy in a long immersion stays round and chocolatey here.
Practically, this press flatters medium roasts and washed single origins hardest. A Central American with caramel and citrus notes is about as good as this brewer gets. Darker roasts work fine, and honestly they work better here than in most methods, but you will want to pull the grind back a step. If you are not sure where your coffee sits, ask us before you order and we will point you at the right bag.
The mistakes we see most often, in order:
- Grinding coarse like a French press, which gives a weak, sour cup no matter how long you wait
- Using pre ground supermarket coffee, which is usually stale and always the wrong size
- Pressing hard and fast, which channels water past the bed instead of through it
- Pushing past the hiss, which drags the last bitter fraction into the mug
- Skipping the bloom on fresh roasted coffee, where the carbon dioxide is still active
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the AeroPress Original coffee maker make real espresso?
No. Real espresso needs roughly nine bars of pressure and this press makes a fraction of that. What you get is a concentrated shot with some crema like texture, which is excellent as the base for a latte or an Americano. Call it espresso style and you will not be disappointed.
Can I use it for cold brew?
Yes, and it is fast. Use the same fine drip grind, room temperature water at a 1 to 12 ratio, stir, let it sit two minutes, then press. You get a cold concentrate in minutes instead of overnight.
How do I clean it?
Unscrew the cap over a trash can and push the plunger the rest of the way. The spent grounds and filter come out as one dry puck. Rinse the seal and set it upside down. That is it.
Do I have to use paper filters?
Paper is what we recommend, because the filtration is the reason the cup is grit free. Metal filters exist and they let more oils through, which reads closer to a French press. Try paper first so you know what the baseline tastes like.
What coffee should I order with it?
Start with something medium, fresh, and whole bean. Everything we roast ships within days of roasting, and an AeroPress Original coffee maker is wasted on beans that have been sitting in a warehouse for six months.
The AeroPress has been around since 2005 and the design has barely changed, which tells you something. Grab an AeroPress Original coffee maker, grind fresh, and you will not go back to the pod machine.
