Description
Decaf single origin coffee has a bad reputation it no longer deserves. Most of what people remember as terrible decaf was old, cheap and roasted months before it was sold. Ours is named-lot coffee from real farms, decaffeinated before it reaches us, then roasted here after you place your order. You still choose the bean and you still choose the roast.
What Makes Decaf Single Origin Coffee Different
Start with the honest part. Decaf is not caffeine free. Roughly 97 percent of the caffeine is removed, which leaves a small residual amount in every cup. If you are told to avoid caffeine entirely, talk to your doctor rather than relying on decaf.
The second thing worth knowing is that decaffeination changes the bean before we ever see it. The process softens the seed and strips out some of the more delicate aromatics, so decaf tends to cup a little rounder, a little sweeter and with less high acidity than the same origin with caffeine intact.
That is not a loss so much as a shift. Good decaf single origin coffee still tastes distinctly like where it came from. A Sumatra still tastes earthy. An Ethiopian still tastes fruity. The volume is just turned down a few notches.
Decaffeinated beans also roast faster and darker than regular coffee because they are already partly broken down by the process. That is a roasting problem, not your problem, but it is the reason so much supermarket decaf tastes scorched.
Choosing Your Origin
- Colombia Decaf EA. Decaffeinated with ethyl acetate, a sugarcane-derived solvent. Sweet, smooth, cocoa and caramel.
- Costa Rica Decaf El Indio SWP. Swiss Water processed. Clean and bright with citrus and a tidy finish, and about as close to the caffeinated version as decaf gets.
- Mexico Organic Chiapas MWP. Mountain water processed. Mild, nutty and gentle, with light cocoa.
- Brazil Decaf Mogiana. Heavy body, low acidity, peanut and chocolate. The best pick for espresso or for anyone who drinks with milk.
- Guatemala Organic Decaf HHT Royal Select. Balanced and cocoa-forward with a little apple brightness behind it.
- Peru Organic Decaf Sol y Cafe. Soft and smooth. Toasted nuts and mild sweetness, very low acidity.
- Ethiopia Decaf Sidamo Natural. Dry processed before decaffeination, so the fruit survives. Berry and floral notes.
- Sumatra Organic Decaf Mandheling. Full bodied, earthy and syrupy. If you drink Sumatra with caffeine, you will recognize this.
- Papua New Guinea Organic Decaf Purosa A/X. Cleaner and sweeter than the Sumatra. Cocoa and brown sugar with a soft apple note.
- Timor Organic Decaf Cafe Timor Coop. Woody, quiet and easygoing with a medium body.
- Indonesia Organic Decaf Bali Hai. A blend rather than a single lot. Sweet and spicy with an Indonesian backbone.
- Espresso Blend Decaf. Also a blend, built for shots. Dense, chocolatey and made to hold up under steamed milk.
- Roaster’s Choice. We send whichever decaf is drinking best that week.
Choosing Your Roast Level for Decaf Single Origin Coffee
Light roast is the trickiest here. Because decaffeinated beans darken quickly, a true light roast takes real attention. It works best on the Ethiopia Sidamo and the Costa Rica El Indio, where there is fruit and citrus worth preserving.
Medium roast is the right default for nearly everything on this page. It gives you sweetness and body without pushing the beans into bitterness.
Dark roast suits Brazil, Sumatra and the Espresso Blend Decaf. Those have the density to take it. Just know that dark decaf goes from rich to burnt faster than caffeinated coffee, which is why we roast it in small batches. Our roast level guide covers the tradeoffs.
Roasted to Order in Concord, California
Freshness is the whole difference between decent decaf and the stuff that soured people on it. Roasted coffee is at its best about 7 to 21 days off roast, and decaf is no exception.
Nothing here is pre-roasted and warehoused. Your order goes on a Buckeye roaster at our Concord, California roastery and ships within 72 hours, so your decaf single origin coffee arrives inside its best window instead of six months past it.
Sizes and Grind
Decaf single origin coffee comes in 6oz, 12oz, 24oz and 5lb. A lot of households keep decaf alongside regular coffee for evenings, and the 12oz usually fits that pattern well.
Whole bean is the better buy. Decaffeinated beans are more porous and go stale faster once ground, so grinding at home makes a bigger difference here than it does with regular coffee. If you order ground, tell us the brew method. Our brew guide has the ratios, and the rest of the lineup is in the shop.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is decaf single origin coffee completely caffeine free?
No. About 97 percent of the caffeine is removed, so a small amount remains in every cup.
Which decaffeination method do you use?
We buy the beans already decaffeinated, and the method is named in the lot where the supplier specifies it. EA is ethyl acetate, SWP is Swiss Water and MWP is mountain water.
Does decaf taste weaker?
Softer, not weaker. Body and sweetness hold up well. The high floral and citrus notes are what fade.
Can I put decaf on a subscription?
Yes, and it saves money. Set up a coffee subscription here.
How is caffeine actually removed?
Wikipedia’s article on decaffeination walks through the water and solvent methods in detail.
