It is not intended as medical advice and should not replace consultation with a qualified healthcare professional. Individual responses to caffeine vary based on age, body weight, medical conditions, medications, pregnancy, and sensitivity. Always consult your physician before making dietary changes, especially if you have heart conditions, high blood pressure, anxiety disorders, gastrointestinal issues, or are pregnant or nursing. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA, 2023) recommends healthy adults limit caffeine intake to 400 mg per day.

Three main things determine how much caffeine is in your cup: the bean type (Robusta has roughly double the caffeine of Arabica), how the coffee is measured after roasting, and your brewing method. Here’s how each one works so you can dial in your caffeine.

Bean Type Matters Most

The biggest factor is the type of bean. Arabica beans are prized for their smooth, mild flavor and contain roughly 1.2–1.5% caffeine. Robusta beans pack a bigger punch at around 2.2–2.7% caffeine by weight. So if you want a bolder caffeine kick, Robusta (or a blend containing it) is the way to go. We break down the full comparison in Arabica vs. Robusta.

Growing Conditions Play a Role

Caffeine also varies between varietals thanks to soil, altitude, and climate. Whether your coffee comes from the highlands of Colombia or the fields of Brazil, different origins bring their own flavors and caffeine levels — part of what makes exploring single origins so much fun.

Roast Level and the Density Factor

Here’s where it gets interesting. Caffeine is fairly resilient to heat, so it doesn’t simply “burn off” — but some is lost as roasting progresses, and how you measure your coffee matters a lot. Darker beans lose mass and become less dense, so if you measure by volume (scoops), a dark roast can deliver less caffeine than a lighter one; measure by weight and the gap narrows. On balance, light and medium roasts tend to edge out darker ones per cup. For the full picture, see which roast is strongest.

Your Brewing Method

Finally, how you brew shifts the caffeine in your cup. Espresso is highly concentrated per ounce, while drip coffee is milder per ounce but usually served in a larger volume. For a full breakdown of caffeine by drink type, see our caffeine-by-type guide.
